CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH
WORKSHOPS & training

Under the Church National Safeguarding Guidelines it is a requirement that every Church volunteer and minister have a clear understanding of what is expected of them in their roles, how to keep themselves and others safe, who they report to in their voluntary role and what safeguarding provisions are involved.
The New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference (NZCBC) and the Congregational Leaders Conference Aotearoa New Zealand (CLCANZ) are committed to ensuring that policies are actively followed in all Catholic entities and organisations so that a safe and nurturing environment exists for everyone. We have a duty to protect from harm those who are especially vulnerable, to respond compassionately to those who have suffered harm within the Church, and to ensure that our practices prevent harm occurring.
A key part of achieving this is the facilitation of ongoing Safeguarding Training for all those involved in Church life (Clergy, staff and volunteers).
There are two tiers of training:

Safeguarding Workshops are run continuously throughout the year at each parish. Every volunteer, regardless of role, is expected to attend every three years. The Diocesan Safeguarding Officer guides attendees through the background, principles, importance and the practicalities of Safeguarding.
